Canine Influenza Virus
Is your dog a social butterfly and enjoys the company of other dogs? Please take a moment to read about Canine Influenza Bivalent Vaccine, which Sauk Point Veterinary Clinic recommends for dogs with a social lifestyle!
Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is part of the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) comprising Bordetella known as Kennel Cough, Parainfluenza virus, Distemper virus, Herpes and Corona virus, Adenovirus 2, and Mycoplasma. CIV is spread from direct and indirect contact through exposed objects, people, and dogs. It presents similar to most respiratory diseases with symptoms including coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, decreased appetite, lethargy, sometimes a fever, vomiting and diarrhea. It is important to note that dogs may be carriers and not show symptoms for up to 24 days! Any social dog is at risk ; however short nosed breeds, immune compromised, senior and very young dogs are higher risk. The H3N2 strain can affect cats and ferrets as well. Fortunately, CIV is not Zoonotic so people can not be infected.
If your dog is showing symptoms contact us to work together to design an appropriate diagnostic and treatment plan before vaccination. Sauk Point Veterinary Clinic offers a safe, effective bivalent Canine Influenza vaccine series containing both H3N8 and H3N2 strains to protect healthy social dogs.
